(Nassau County, Fla.) – February 17, 2020 – The Nassau Education Foundation each year provides matching grant funds to Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs throughout Nassau County. CTE is the practice of teaching skills-based careers to students in middle school, high school and post-secondary institutions. This year funding was granted to the Building and Construction Program at Yulee High School. This program incorporates a variety of hands-on activities and lessons with a focus on teamwork and creativity. Students study the principles of designing and crafting structures. Students are eligible to test for several different industry certifications as well.
Nassau County Foundation board member, Julie McGuinnes recently visited Mike Landtroop’s Building and Construction class at Yulee High School. The class was wrapping up a busy semester with a culminating activity. Several groups of students designed and built a domino chain using their construction knowledge. Creating a chain that would successfully fall down requires creativity and strong team work. Students used different configurations, bridges, ramps and spirals. One misplaced domino could lead to the entire chain stopping.
Students in the higher level classes learn to build a replica of a house. If they continue in the program they go on to build an addition on their house.
Student’s in Mr. Landtroop’s classes can earn NCCER CORE certifications. NCCER stands for the National Center for Construction Education Research. NCCER develops standardized construction and maintenance curriculum and assessments. There are a number of construction career pathways. Students completing the NCCER CORE may continue to AS degrees in Industrial Management Technology, Building and Construction Technology or Architectural Design and Construction Technology. There is also the potential for apprenticeships through NEFBA (The Northeast Florida Builders Association). FSCJ has workforce certificate programs.
